making a difference
A big part of starting Ahnu was to create a business model that allowed us to act as responsible citizens and to give back by partnering with like-minded organizations. By working together, we can achieve great things that truly make a difference in people’s lives. Listed below are some of our partnerships—we are thankful for all they do and more thankful to call them friends. Ahnu has contributed more than $315,000 to charitable organizations since our founding in 2006.
The Wilderness Land Trust
AHNU is proud to announce a new partnership with The Wilderness Land Trust. Ahnu is also a sponsor of The Wilderness Land Trust through the Plus 3 Network. We value the work of The Wilderness Land Trust, as an organization with their focus on purchasing and preserving wilderness. Plus 3 Network members who select Ahnu Footwear as their 'sponsor' help to directly support the Wilderness Land Trust with worthwhile giving each time a member completes and logs a fitness activity.
The Wilderness Land Trust is a small, highly specialized nonprofit organization established to buy and protect wilderness land. Since it was founded in 1992, the non-profit organization has preserved more than 365 parcels comprising of more than 38,000 acres of wilderness inholdings in 84 designated and proposed wilderness areas. The Wilderness Land Trust, a 501(c)(3) organization, has offices in California and Colorado. For more information visit their website www.wildernesslandtrust.org
1% for the Planet
As part of our commitment to stewardship and social responsibility, Ahnu is honored to support 1% for the Planet by contributing 1% of our gross revenue on an annual basis to organizations that share our environmental values. 1% for the Planet was launched in 2001 by Yvon Chouinard, environmental activist and founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies. Astute and visionary businessmen, Chouinard and Mathews believe passionately that the health of the environment is integral to human and economic health, and that business is responsible for positive change. They created this association in an effort to bring other like-minded businesses in to help solve our environmental crisis and build successful companies at the same time. 1% for the Planet currently includes 1,200 member companies in 48 countries around the world. To date, more than 100 million dollars have been donated to foster positive environmental change. For more information, we encourage you to visit www.onepercentfortheplanet.
breast cancer fund
Ahnu is proud to be partnered with the Breast Cancer Fund, the only national organization focused solely on prevention, to protect our bodies and environment, and to work toward a world where we've stopped breast cancer before it starts. Currently, breast cancer effects 1 in 8 women nationally. For this reason, the Breast Cancer Fund works to identify and eliminate the environmental causes of disease. Ahnu greatly values the work that the Breast Cancer Fund does to protect our bodies and environment.
In May of 2011, Ahnu reached our goal donation of $100,000 to the Breast Cancer Fund through our Prevention Mission that entailed a donation of $5 for every pair of women's performance shoes sold between March and May of 2011. In addition to this donation, Ahnu has also donated more than $30,000 through our consumers’ activities logged on the Plus 3 Network. Ahnu would like to thank each and every one of our consumers that participated in this program and also those that continue to support our brand. We believe in giving more as we grow, and with your support we can continue to make generous donations to honorable organizations like the Breast Cancer Fund.
Whether you enjoy running, hiking, swimming, walking or biking, simply log your physical activities on the Plus3 Network, and we’ll, in turn, make a donation to the Breast Cancer Fund. The more you log, the more we give. It’s that easy! Visit www.plus3network.com and choose to support the Breast Cancer Fund and Ahnu partnership.
Ahnu is the exclusive footwear sponsor of Team Farsight. Team Farsight, led by Trevor Thomas, is an inspirational team of hikers dedicated to raising public awareness and changing societal expectations for the blind, while simultaneously empowering the blind population to achieve greater heights.
Trevor Thomas is the first blind person to complete an unassisted thru-hike of the 2,200 mile Appalachian Trail. After losing his sight at the age of 35 to a rare eye disease, Trevor Thomas decided to turn his own disability into a position of advocacy and strength. He pursues his passion of summiting some of the worlds tallest peaks, and continues to rock climb, participate in long-distance hiking, and adventure races.
Team Farsight's Blind Ambassador Program was developed in partnership with the Boy Scouts of Manchester, MA. They taught the sighted Scouts the basics of blindness and designed activities for them to perform under a blindfold so they could gain a greater respect and understanding of their blind counterparts from The Perkins School for the Blind. The kids were taught to work together to safely hike and overnight camp. Team Farsight is currently working to replicate the program by partnering with with other Boy Scout Troops, volunteer service organizations and youth groups along with other schools for the blind, and their outreach programs.
Plus 3 Network
AHNU is a proud sponsor of The Wilderness Land Trust and the Breast Cancer Fund within the Plus 3 Network, a social networking website that pairs worthy causes and nonprofits with corporate sponsors that are willing to donate 5 cents or more for each mile that a Plus 3 member bikes, runs, walks, or swims and logs on the Plus 3 site. Plus 3 actively manages, motivates, validates and rewards members for participating in fitness activities.
Plus 3 now has an iPhone application, making the journey of personal fitness and sponsorship of worthwhile causes even easier. This mobile, GPS-enhanced social networking application successfully allows members to track and log miles on the go. Go to plus3network.com to sign up and choose AHNU as your corporate sponsor to benefit either the Breast Cancer Fund or The Wilderness Land Trust.
Mindful Life Project
AHNU is proud to announce a new local partnership with the non-profit organization Mindful Life Project. Mindful Life Project, through research-based and culturally relevant school-based intervention programs, guides students to make positive life choices both at school and in their community. Students learn to understand and navigate their feelings, emotions, thoughts, and life experiences, which enables new, wiser responses that improve attention, learning, emotional regulation, empathy, and conflict resolution. Mindful Life Project serves over 4,500 students at 11 Title 1 elementary and middle schools in West Contra Costa County, primarily in Richmond, CA.
Mindful Life Project’s mission is to empower underserved children through mindfulness and other transformative skills to gain self-awareness, confidence, self-regulation and resilience, leading to lifelong success. Their programs teach mindfulness on its own, which is also woven into three modalities: yoga, expressive arts and the performing arts (focusing on hip-hop). Their partner schools have experienced significant reductions in discipline issues and classroom teachers have reported an average of 20 minutes of increased quality teaching time daily from not having to spend time on classroom management. AHNU is proud to support innovative organizations such as Mindful Life Project that are making a difference in people’s lives.
Running, riding, taking on new challenges—all more fun with friends to motivate and cheer us on.
The Team LUNA Chix Program brings together women interested in learning new sports, staying active and inspiring others to do the same.
Together the teams train, compete and support each other, while also fundraising for LUNA's non-profit partner, the Breast Cancer Fund.
Ahnu is proud to support the Team LUNA Chix local program and encourage women to get out of the house, challenge each other, and have fun doing so. Team members range from full-time moms to business owners; students to doctors. From casual sports enthusiasts to more competitive athletes, they all like to get outside and get their hearts pumping. They push themselves, without being overly competitive or the least bit intimidating.
Africa Yoga Project
Ahnu is excited to sponsor the Africa Yoga Project, an organization dedicated to enriching lives of all people in Kenya. Africa Yoga Project empowers young people in Kenya’s urban slums through yoga, innovating a replicable model that creates jobs, improves health and develops leaders. AYP has educated and employed 98 teachers who teach 300 free classes each week, empower 6,000 people weekly.
Africa Yoga Project educates, empowers, elevates and employs youth from Africa using the transformational practice of yoga. AYP’s vision is to create opportunities for youth to step into their greatness, become self-sustaining and leaders in their communities. AYP connects those who want to make a difference by sharing their skills and strengths to those who can benefit from that teaching. The exchange is usually mutual and contributes equally to all. Individuals are empowered, relationships are forged, communities are healed both emotionally and physically, and new possibilities are seen and made real.
