MEET AHNU'S INSPIRATIONAL YOGA AMBASSADORS
Each month we feature an ambassador who inspires us, their students, and the community.
Lourdes Paredes, Ahnu Yoga Ambassador
Lourdes Paredes is a yoga teacher in Chicago who loves spending time with her husband, reading magazines and books, and cooking and trying new recipes. She also LOVES shoes, even though ironically her job requires her to be barefoot most of the time! Her shoe collection has multiple personalities: dressy heels and comfy shoes, and Ahnu is her "go-to, go-anywhere" shoe for every day.
So far Lourdes has had many epic moments in 2013: traveling to Hong Kong and the Maldives, teaching at Wanderlust Festival in Squaw Valley (where she discovered Ahnu shoes), and launching ILLUMINE Chicago magazine. Most days the hard work of showing up, being authentic, consistent, and true to Self is the epic journey, but these were truly highlights!
ILLUMINE magazine is a passion project which brings together her love of magazines, yoga and Chicago. It is an expression of the beauty of the practice of yoga in diverse settings around the city, talented teachers, committed students, and the down-to earth and wonderful offerings in Chicago. Readers will find vegetarian recipes from some of Chicago's world renowned restaurants, featured local artists, and stylists' suggestions for everyone to enjoy. What inspired you to become a yoga teacher?
I became a yoga teacher because I love the process of learning and transformation, sharing from the heart, and the spiritual path. But I didn't set out to be a yoga teacher. I just started teaching while in grad school until I found a "real" job. One day, I asked one of my yoga students, who I knew was a job recruiter, to look at my resume and give me feedback, and she said "It looks great, but you seem to be doing what you are meant to be doing (teaching yoga)." That was a revelation and I lived into it.
What are your future goals?
Short term, I am working on a new magazine, ILLUMINE Chicago. Long term, I would love to have more travel adventures with my husband, interview spiritual teachers for a book, and become a better cook to host dinner parties.
What’s playing on your ipod right now? Just today my friend introduced me to Beats Antique. I am a big fan of DJ Drez, Michael Franti, and EarthRise SoundSystem. My all time, any time favorite, is Amy Grant.
What is your favorite book and why?
One of my favorite novels is A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry because it is written so beautifully. But I don't really have an all time favorite book. I reread a lot of my non-fiction on spirituality and growth. I am different or learn something different every time.
